BARRIER HOP BURPEES

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 15 - 2009

We love olympic lifting. We love developing our strength. We also love those opportunities to showcase our conditioning during randomly programmed METCON's. Running, Pull-ups, Squats, Double Unders and yes, even Burpees. But not just your normal regular "run-of-the-mill" burpees, we're talking "Barrier Hop Burpees" which include parallets. Why be predicatable anyway? It's boring. It's uneventful. It's so un-gang-like. After 6 minutes of high-intensity barrier hop burpees, we all caught our breath and took a moment for a post-METCON pose. It's a box norm for us. Get used to it.

BEAST STRENGTH!

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 19 - 2009

To be clear: There is nothing like loading up the bar with a shit-ton of weight and then lifting it off the ground all the way over your head. N-O-T-H-I-N-G! It's a rush. It takes hard work. It takes concentration. It takes well executed technique. Most of all, it takes HEART. Every day we get up before most of the free-world for the opportunity to develop our technique and strength. We coach one another. We grunt. We leave sweat puddles behind. But most of all, we work our asses off to set new PR's. To call us strong is a borderline insult. We prefer you call us all Beasts. Why? Because we deserve it!

SUPER DAVE = SUPER BUTTERFLY

Sometimes "pretty technique" is both more efficient and fun to watch. Notice I said sometimes and not all of the times. Olympic lifting is kinda pretty. Kettle Bell swings are not pretty. Now, Butterfly Pull-ups? Yeah, those are pretty. Come on now, how can you not agree? When executed properly they are both pretty and extremely efficient. Like anything else, all it takes is some good 'ol fashioned ball-busting practice. Execute these well and you're assured of a faster "Fran" time. But, don't get me started on that evil bitch. For now, we'll relish on the beauty of the Butterfly.

LOYAL FRIEND: "SWEAT ANGEL"

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 22 - 2009

Isn't it nice to always have an "angel on your shoulder?" Let's be serious here for a moment. To feel as if you have an angel watching over you is a good thing. It's healthy. It's a positive sense of security. It's spiritual. It's inspiring. Sound familiar? It's another way the gang defines CrossFit. No wonder why we all openly welcome our Sweat Angel to the box every day. She's a positive byproduct of who we are, what we love, and how hard we work. Go ahead, give her a hug. It's okay. If you're lucky, she might even hug you back.....after you call "TIME!" of course.

PALEO GREATNESS!

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 19 - 2009

Grains? You're outta here. Sugar? Sugar feeds cancer! Dairy? Don't even get us started, 86 that garbage too. Meat? Yum! Nothing less than one pound please. Eggs? Oh yeah! Whip me up a dozen will ya? Avocado? Oils? Bacon? Nuts? Seeds? Yes! Yes! YES! Hell YES! Keep it coming! Anything that falls into the paleo diet, we'll eat it up and by the truck load. Anything from the FDA derived recommended daily allowances food pyramid that falls outside of being "paleo approved" and we'll run that same truck right over it. Now pardon all of us while we knaw on the bone. Someone's gotta support the cavemen. It can't be just GEICO. That's just not patriotic.

COMPETITION. RESULTS. RESPECT.

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 23 - 2009

Know what one of the of the most admired fixtures in our box is? No, it's not the bumpers. Certainly not the rowers. Dare we say it's not even the beloved pull-up bar. It's the whiteboard. Without question, it is the most coveted fixture in our box. We grimace in front of it. We smile in front of it. We sweat, scream and shout in front of it. We even celebrate in front of it. But all of us gang members respect the hell out of it. It is loved. It is feared. It draws all sorts of sound and facial reactions. But, at the end of every WOD, be it great, good, or bad results, we give it the love and respect it deserves and we write on it.

Annihil-"Nate"-'d!

Posted by The Graveyard Gang On 7:56 PM

Sometimes curiosity can get the best of someone. Today, it got the best of me. I woke up this morning and my first thought was "WHOA! Ah. Ah. Ah. HURTS.TO.MOVE.ANYTHING." The after effects from the past two days clearly reaping havoc on my body, I contemplated staying in bed and skipping the WOD. I stood in the middle of my room, looked at the bed then looked at the door (the door to the room where I get changed and ready for the WOD every morning). Again, I looked at the bed and then the door. At that moment, the wonderment and curiosity took over and all I could think was: "What does Coach Wild Bill have in store for us today?" I simply had to find out. But, to do that it meant I had to stop looking at the bed thinking about panzee-ing out and actually go to the box and face the wrath.

To my surprise, I wasn't the only one hobbling in this morning. Pete and I arrived at the same time and all I had to do was glance in his direction and, even through the morning darkness, his face said it all. He and I felt exactly the same. Not only that, we were moving at about the same speed. There's a term for it, it's called "snails pace." Screw that, I'm calling it "Wild Bill's wrath pace!" I smile and say hello to everyone as I walk in and then walk closer to the prestigious whiteboard. In my head I had only one thought which was: "Please don't let it be squats! Please lord, don't let it be squats. Please, oh please, oh please!" When I was close enough to read it, here's what we were all greeted with:

"Nate"
- 2 Muscle-Ups
- 4 HSPU's
- 8 KB Swings (32K, 71LBS)

CHA CHING! Ring it up baby! We've never done this one before and what a bonus, no squats. Game-friggin'-on! Another day and Bill brings in the HQ WOD which is something he doesn't always do. Surely, there's a reason for it - and we certainly all notice him doing this - but we're not complaining at all. We love the method to his madness. We warmed up with a quick row, some standard mobility drills and finally some new stretches. Mind you, stretching is never easy but these sure felt good. By the time the WOD was ready to kick off nearly all of the painful moaning ceased and we were ready to go.

"That's one really impressive 'Sweat Angel'. Look at that thing, it's actually got a few puddles! Thank god we washed the floors yesterday." - Coach Bill

Music loud, humidity high and gang members focused, we did what we always do: We all went right after "Nate." This was our first meeting and while I won't speak for anyone else, I found him to be very sneaky. Kinda like "creeper." The first few rounds weren't too bad and my confidence was soaring. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, "Nate" stopped with the creeper and swung the hammer. It was the end of round 9 with 5 minutes to go and my body was wanting to go into shut-down mode. I was on the floor and just finished 1 HSPU and was hurting. Tired. Breathing heavy. Body tightening. Dying. Thankfully I heard Pete yell out "COME ON Tommy Mo! COME ON! Kip up and get to work!" Those little shout-outs from the gang members go a long way with me - for all of us!

The 20:00 mark came, Bill called "TIME!" and once again in near cadence we all hit the deck and collapsed. Only today, it was hotter in the box and we all were drenched. Jeff? He looked like the most recent contestant in the dunk tank. Pete? His shirtless upper body could have blinded you with the shine. Nicole? Her hair in shambles and knots. Barbie? Her workout clothes might as well have been saran wrap. Me? The sweat angel tells the entire story. Look closely at the bottom. See that? You're seeing it correctly. Those really are sweat puddles. I got up and headed outside where it was still raining and stood in the chilling rain trying desperately to cool off. Bill strolls over, congratulates us on the hard work and then turns and looks at the floor: "That's one really impressive 'Sweat Angel'. Look at that thing, it's actually got a few puddles! Thank god we washed the floors yesterday."

What else can you say? It's the sign of hard work, right? Combine that with a tough WOD, high box humidity, positive encouragement and good music and I - or anyone else - produce a sweat angel on an entirely different level.

Whatever you do, don't even think about asking us to wash the floors.

Naga. Naga. Naganna happen.

--> Gang Member of the Day: Jeff
M'man Jeff took one step closer to graduating to BEAST status today. Wanting to "stick to the norm" he almost used the 16K kettle bell. Instead, he set it back down and went to the 24K bell for the WOD. On his blog he writes about how heavy it was and how at round 2 he wanted to scale back. However, he found a way to "tame the animal" and stay with that 24K bell for the entire 20:00. That alone deserves respect. Way to go, Jeff!

Way to gut it out today, Gang! Thanks for the B-L-A-S-T!
