BARRIER HOP BURPEES

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 15 - 2009

We love olympic lifting. We love developing our strength. We also love those opportunities to showcase our conditioning during randomly programmed METCON's. Running, Pull-ups, Squats, Double Unders and yes, even Burpees. But not just your normal regular "run-of-the-mill" burpees, we're talking "Barrier Hop Burpees" which include parallets. Why be predicatable anyway? It's boring. It's uneventful. It's so un-gang-like. After 6 minutes of high-intensity barrier hop burpees, we all caught our breath and took a moment for a post-METCON pose. It's a box norm for us. Get used to it.

BEAST STRENGTH!

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 19 - 2009

To be clear: There is nothing like loading up the bar with a shit-ton of weight and then lifting it off the ground all the way over your head. N-O-T-H-I-N-G! It's a rush. It takes hard work. It takes concentration. It takes well executed technique. Most of all, it takes HEART. Every day we get up before most of the free-world for the opportunity to develop our technique and strength. We coach one another. We grunt. We leave sweat puddles behind. But most of all, we work our asses off to set new PR's. To call us strong is a borderline insult. We prefer you call us all Beasts. Why? Because we deserve it!

SUPER DAVE = SUPER BUTTERFLY

Sometimes "pretty technique" is both more efficient and fun to watch. Notice I said sometimes and not all of the times. Olympic lifting is kinda pretty. Kettle Bell swings are not pretty. Now, Butterfly Pull-ups? Yeah, those are pretty. Come on now, how can you not agree? When executed properly they are both pretty and extremely efficient. Like anything else, all it takes is some good 'ol fashioned ball-busting practice. Execute these well and you're assured of a faster "Fran" time. But, don't get me started on that evil bitch. For now, we'll relish on the beauty of the Butterfly.

LOYAL FRIEND: "SWEAT ANGEL"

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 22 - 2009

Isn't it nice to always have an "angel on your shoulder?" Let's be serious here for a moment. To feel as if you have an angel watching over you is a good thing. It's healthy. It's a positive sense of security. It's spiritual. It's inspiring. Sound familiar? It's another way the gang defines CrossFit. No wonder why we all openly welcome our Sweat Angel to the box every day. She's a positive byproduct of who we are, what we love, and how hard we work. Go ahead, give her a hug. It's okay. If you're lucky, she might even hug you back.....after you call "TIME!" of course.

PALEO GREATNESS!

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 19 - 2009

Grains? You're outta here. Sugar? Sugar feeds cancer! Dairy? Don't even get us started, 86 that garbage too. Meat? Yum! Nothing less than one pound please. Eggs? Oh yeah! Whip me up a dozen will ya? Avocado? Oils? Bacon? Nuts? Seeds? Yes! Yes! YES! Hell YES! Keep it coming! Anything that falls into the paleo diet, we'll eat it up and by the truck load. Anything from the FDA derived recommended daily allowances food pyramid that falls outside of being "paleo approved" and we'll run that same truck right over it. Now pardon all of us while we knaw on the bone. Someone's gotta support the cavemen. It can't be just GEICO. That's just not patriotic.

COMPETITION. RESULTS. RESPECT.

Posted by Tommy Mo On August - 23 - 2009

Know what one of the of the most admired fixtures in our box is? No, it's not the bumpers. Certainly not the rowers. Dare we say it's not even the beloved pull-up bar. It's the whiteboard. Without question, it is the most coveted fixture in our box. We grimace in front of it. We smile in front of it. We sweat, scream and shout in front of it. We even celebrate in front of it. But all of us gang members respect the hell out of it. It is loved. It is feared. It draws all sorts of sound and facial reactions. But, at the end of every WOD, be it great, good, or bad results, we give it the love and respect it deserves and we write on it.

Wait!? Is that 90K or 100K?

Ever hear the old cliche: "It's the people that make a difference?" Sure you have. You're all nodding right now and one of the many thoughts in my head is that this cliche really hits home inside the walls of our box. Sure, we love CrossFit for many reasons such as the challenge and the competition. But, the glue that brings the GYG together is the people. Without them, the challenge changes and, well, there really isn't any competition either - except against yourself. But, seriously! What fun is that, anyway?

Yesterday we get to the box and people are hanging their heads because of the fact that Super Dave wasn't feeling well, elected to rest and didn't join the gang. This morning, Super Dave is present but Pete and Garth decided to rest their bad selves. Like in Dave's absence, we all hung our heads. It's just not the same when the "founding fathers" of the GYG are not all present and accounted for. But, we push through it. We're tough. We're resilient. We always find a way.
Today's WOD was another challenge for all of us in many areas: Strength, Conditioning and Mathematically.

What? Mathematically? Did I read that right? Yes, you did. It's not a type-o. We'll get to that in a moment. For now, let's highlight the WOD:

Strength: Front Squats
1, 1, 1

Conditioning: Spring Rowing
500M Rows

(4 rounds for time)
(3:00 rest between rows)

"Wait! That was 100K? Seriously? Oh shit man, my bad. I thought that was 90K!? No wonder why you were balking at the weight." - Tom
There we were gathering weight and warming up our front squats. After doing 10 slow reps with just the bar, Dave goes and grabs the 10K plates. "Uhh no dude. Put those away. We can start off higher for our warmer sets. Grab the 20K wheels." I said. Without hesitation, Dave grabbed the 20K plates and we loaded the bar and did our warmer set. Add 10K more for another warmer set. When he was done, Dave ducked into the bathroom and I proceed to load up the bar. Upon his exit, Dave takes one look at the bar and chimes off: "No! Tom, that's way to heavy. I can't do that much. My PR is 90K!"

"Stop it! Do you hear yourself? Already allowing those negative thoughts to take over. You can do this and you WILL do this. Now stop whining and get fired up already." I retorted back. Never one to debate, Dave gave the best accepting "okay, fine" response he could muster and got under the bar. He steps back, we all shout "COME ON! Now DO IT!" Dave squats, looks to explode out of the hole, pauses and bails. Fail! Seeing the failed attempt, Coach Zach approaches and says "Dave, you're already trying to PR at 100K?" Then it hit me. Uh oh.

I turn to Dave utterly confused and say: "Wait! That was 100K? Seriously? Oh shit man, my bad. I thought that was 90K." True to form, genius me displayed his mathematical prowess and once again added the load incorrectly thus sending our friend Dave 10K higher than his 1RM PR for his 2nd lift. In disbelief, Jeff turned to me and said "You're serious. You really thought that was 90K? Did you look at the kilos on the bumpers?"

Yes, I did. I just fucked it all up.

We finish the Front Squats and move upstairs to the rowers. Zach decided to send us in 2 heats: The GYG ladies would lead off and while they rested, the GYG men would follow.

Repeat for 4 rounds. Add water when necessary.

I fired up the music and the ladies were off and rowing. Everyone was gutting it out. Round 1 ended and we all felt good. Round 2 ended, we looked more fatigued. Round 3 ended, most of us lay on the floor recovering. Round 4 ended and with our arms and legs screaming for mercy, most of us rolled off the rowers onto our backs. Well, I did - I was trashed! The rower has the kind of affect on me and it did for others as well. In the end, everyone was pleased with their performances and, most importantly, we were glad it was over.

--> Gang Member of the Day: Brice
A recent grad of the ramp-up class, Brice is slowly becoming a more regular member of the GYG. He's been a great addition to the gang and brings that special hard-working yet encouraging element we all thrive on. Not to mention, here's a guy you have to keep a close eye on. 4 WOD's into "official" CFF programming and he set a 90K 1RM for his Front Squat. Get some of that fellas! Great work, Brice!

Fantastic work today people! Thanks for the B-L-A-S-T!
