A CrossFit athlete's achilles heel can sometimes be the weather. Ol' Mother Nature can sure put a damper on an athlete's performance when she really wants to. It's almost as if she sits waiting for the perfect moment and then with one crushing blow....BAM! Here comes the game changer. Rain. Heat. Humidity. You name it, she's got it! But, when she can't mess
with the athlete, she does the next best thing - she messes up the assigned WOD for the entire GYG. Today she did just that sending Coach Zach into "plan b" mode.As the rain poured down, we continued to warm up with a series of skill exercises like pull-ups and sit-ups and then into 2 rounds of Burgener drills to continue to work on technique needed for cleans, snatches and dead lifts. Then the WOD was posted:
"Kalsu"
- Thrusters (60K, 132LBS)
- Burpees
* Thrusters on the minute for max of 20:00
* Burpees AMrAP
You could see the competitive spirit start to rise because of all of the evaluation happening around the WOD. Zach stated that the goal was to do 100 thrusters for this workout, which after we did the math, equated to going a full 14:00 without tapping out. "How do you win? Just tell me that. If this were a Games workout, how do you win?" Pete chimed in to which Zach responded "This wouldn't be a workout at the Games. It just wouldn't." For once, I kept my mouth shut and let everyone else do the talking. A rare moment, I know.
We decided that we would naturally keep track of the rounds we completed and then we'd all individually track our number of burpees completed. Genius at work at 6:00AM. With the door to the box wide open and the rain pouring down, the humidity in the box was outrageous. Sweat was pouring down from every GYG member, even Zach who stood there shouting out words of encouragement. Garth tapped out first at 3 rounds at 60K. Then Pete tapped out at 6 rounds also at 60K. Dave was the next to fall at 7 rounds at 40K and finally Tom at 8 rounds at 44.6K.

"I've become a fucking door opener for you guys. That's all I am to you now. Just a guy who opens the door so you can all workout." - Coach Zach
We finished 15 minutes ahead of schedule. So we took the opportunity to do some post-WOD stretching to work on increasing flexibility. Then the unthinkable happened: "Hey guys! Wanna' do the 'AB-RIPPER-X' workout from the P90X videos? C'mon Dave, let's do it." Garth said. We all sat down on the floor with Dave ready to count off the first exercise when Pete chimed in: "Wait! AB...RIPPER....X? Uhhh? What?" As we all sat down, and started the routine, Coach Zach shouted: "OH.MY.GOD! I've become a fucking door opener for you guys. That's all I am to you, just a guy who opens the fucking door so you can all workout." Grinning widely, the gang got up off of the floor and then went to work on the pull-up bar and began cranking out sets of knees to elbows.
Breathe deep, Zach. We were only kidding with you. Gotcha!
--> Gang Member of the Day: Coach Zach
The rain put a serious damper on the planned WOD so he immediately went to "plan b" and put together a tough WOD. Not to mention, him actually putting up with all of the over-analysis of the burpees and thrusters counting that took place. Finally, with us pulling the "AB-RIPPER-X" prank, I think he'd just about had enough. You're a good sport, Zach!
Nice work today, fellas. Thanks for the blast!
